After Implants

DENTAL/PARTIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

The doctors who are providing you with your osseointegrated implant have taken the time to carefully attend to meticulous detail, enabling you to have a successful and satisfying result. Your cooperation, as part of the team, is necessary for complete success. Your attention to detail in following these written instructions is extremely important.

DIET

  • Soft non-chewing diet for 4-6 weeks in the area(s) where your implants were placed.
  • DO NOT USE STRAWS.
  • DO NOT chew or take in hot liquids until your numbness has subsided.

FOOD SUGGESTIONS

a) Dairy products including eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream, quiches.

b) Canned or cooked vegetables, including mashed or baked potatoes.

c) Fruit - canned or stewed.

d) Meats - only ground meats, casseroles, baked fish.

e) Soups - any soup except with firm vegetables or meat.

f) Desserts - soft puddings, custards, jello, ice cream cake.

FOODS TO AVOID

a) Meats - steaks, chops, roasts, fried chicken.

b) Vegetables - no raw vegetables or salads, no corn on the cob

c) Fruit - no whole raw fruits or berries.

d) Desserts - no cookies, pies with crusts, etc.

e) No sandwiches or foods which make you force open your mouth to accept it or chew.

FOLLOW-UP TREATMENT

  • Frequent salt water rinses (1 tsp. of salt in 8 oz. of water) during the day.
  • Rest and sleep with head elevated for 48 hours.
  • Use ice on area for 48 hours. USE NO HEAT ON FACE.
  • Bruising and swelling is normal and may last 7 days.
  • Use medications as directed.
  • Sutures used will dissolve by themselves unless you are told otherwise.
  • Appointment with doctor in 7-14 days.
  • NO SMOKING FOR 24 HOURS.

CAUTION: You are under medication. Do not drive or operate heavy equipment.

COMPLICATIONS

The following are regarded as complications and you should contact us as soon as possible if any appear.

  • Uncontrolled pain or if pain is not improved after 36 hours.
  • Marked temperature rise.
  • Inability to open mouth after 5th day past surgery.
  • Swelling that persists past 5th day or occurs several days after surgery.
  • Any persistent irritation at IV site.
